If you have recently purchased a PC from a retailer, you can skip the following instructions. You’ll need to know these details if you wish to reinstall the PC independently.
Entering the computer’s BIOS configuration is the first order of business. On most machines, hitting F2 or F9 will take you to the BIOS setup menu. To learn how to enter the BIOS, consult your motherboard’s manual.
Select the CD-Rom as the primary boot device in the BIOS under the Boot-Up sequence option. This is customary when buying a computer from a retailer. This means that a CD inserted into the drive will be processed before any data on the hard drive is accessed by the computer.
Insert the Windows installation disc and proceed with the setup. Both Windows XP and Vista are possible here. You will be prompted to partition your hard drives on one of the displays. You can now freely allocate as many terabytes as you like between the C and D drives.
Giving your C drive 20GB would be best, and your D goes the rest. The operating system and any additional programs you want to install will fit within the 20 GB limit.
Always use the C drive for software and the D disk for all your data. Your hard drive will be more streamlined as a result. If you know that deleting files from the C Drive will prevent your computer from starting up, you can avoid doing so.
Get your computer’s driver disks and peripherals from where you originally installed the operating system. Motherboard drivers, sound card drivers, camera drivers, printer drivers, etc.
Drivers are little programs that connect hardware to a computer. Drivers for various peripherals, including sound cards, can be automatically identified and downloaded from the internet. However, installing the drivers that come with the installation disks is safer, as third-party drivers have been known to be incorrect.
Make a new folder on the D drive with the same name as the program you’re installing whenever you get a new program for your computer.
To organize your downloaded programs, make a folder in your D drive called “Software” and drop all of them in there.
If you’re having trouble with an application, reinstall it from the D Drive’s Software folder.
Make a new folder and label it Data on your D: drive. All of your files should be kept in this folder. All spreadsheets, slides, documents, illustrations, and so on are included.
If your computer ever does experience troubles, you may rest assured that as long as this folder is recovered, all your data will be safe. Restoring this Data folder will allow you to pick up where you left off on a new computer.
You should immediately install antivirus software to protect your PC, such as AVG, once you are satisfied that it is set up with all the appropriate programs and the folders are well organized.
Do a virus check immediately to ensure your PC is in good shape? After that, you may set up a mirroring program like Macrium Reflect.
Make a complete backup of your computer, saving it in the D drive and on DVDs. Put these discs in a secure location after you’ve labeled them. You should no longer have to worry about a catastrophic computer failure.
You can quickly restore your entire computer system in a disaster, such as a fire, a broken hard drive, or a virus infection.
You may reinstall everything from scratch if you have produced an image file of your entire PC. Very few people, even among the most proficient PC users, ever use their machines for imaging. But you can work without worry since you know you’ll be OK within a few hours, no matter what occurs.
However, the PC image files can only be restored onto identical hardware. If your hard drive crashes and you need to replace it, shop for a similar model and capacity.
